Most of this activity involves cleaning before and after the application. Silicone caulk is a great product, but beware that it causes eye irritations, not to mention the mess. Vacuum the last pieces of caulk and spray a concentrated mildew killer to get rid of the last germs. Use a rag, add rubbing alcohol, and remove leftover residue of silicone caulk as well as cleaning grease, mold, or anything else that may be breeding behind the silicone caulk. This may take a while to get all the silicone caulk removed as some final pieces are very stubborn and do not want to part with the porcelain. Use a razor blade without scratching the porcelain surface. You will find it pulls off in a strip, therefore using a blade may not be necessary. Make a vertical cut in the silicone caulk with a putty knife and pry up an end of silicone caulk from the porcelain by hand, if possible. Cutting from both sides will break the seal with a porcelain fixture or the wall. The main issue with this repair was the break line was not clean and many fragments were missing. The old adhesive was difficult to remove and increased the repair cost. In this example, the sculpture head broke off and was glued back on with the wrong adhesive. The key elements are: Choosing the right pins for strength, drilling accurately on both sides of the break lines, using the right bonding adhesive, using the right filler adhesives, hiding the repair lines and preserving the repair areas.
